Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) affect how the muscles of the face, tongue, lips, and jaw function during breathing, chewing, swallowing, speaking, and resting posture. When these muscles are not working in balance, it can contribute to challenges such as mouth breathing, tongue thrust, orthodontic relapse, sleep-disordered breathing, feeding difficulties, and speech concerns.
Our orofacial myofunctional therapy program focuses on retraining these muscles to work in a healthy, coordinated way. Through personalized exercises, education, and habit training, therapy helps establish proper tongue posture, nasal breathing, lip seal, and functional swallowing patterns. Many patients experience improved breathing, more stable orthodontic results, clearer speech, better sleep quality, and overall oral health.
At Sugar Land Speech and Language, our approach is highly individualized and collaborative. Our Speech-Language Pathologists integrate myofunctional therapy with airway-focused care and works closely with dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, and other specialists when appropriate.
Our boutique practice provides thoughtful, relationship-centered care designed to help both children and adults build lifelong healthy oral habits.
Speech (Articulation) and Language
Speech and language therapy supports both children and adults who have difficulty communicating clearly or effectively. For children, challenges may include mispronouncing speech sounds, being difficult to understand, limited vocabulary, trouble forming sentences, or difficulty understanding language and following directions. Therapy focuses on building strong speech and language skills that support success at home, school, and in social settings.
We also provide therapy for adults recovering from neurological events, such as stroke or brain injury. These conditions can affect speech clarity, word-finding, memory, comprehension, and the ability to express thoughts. Therapy focuses on rebuilding communication skills, improving cognitive-linguistic abilities, and supporting independence in daily life.
At Sugar Land Speech and Language, therapy is individualized, engaging, and collaborative. We use evidence-based strategies tailored to each patient’s needs while partnering closely with families and caregivers to support progress outside of sessions. Our goal is to help every patient—child or adult—communicate with greater clarity, confidence, and connection.
Stuttering, Fluency, Selective Mutism
Fluency disorders affect the smooth flow of speech and may include stuttering, speech blocks, repetitions, or prolonged sounds. Some children and adults may also experience Selective Mutism, an anxiety-based communication difficulty where a person is able to speak comfortably in some settings but finds it extremely difficult to speak in others, such as at school or in social situations.
Therapy focuses on building comfortable, confident communication rather than simply “fixing” speech. Treatment may include strategies to support smoother speech, reduce speaking tension, build communication confidence, and address the emotional and social aspects of speaking. For individuals with selective mutism, therapy emphasizes creating safe communication opportunities and gradually expanding speaking across environments.
At Sugar Land Speech and Language, this evaluation and therapy service is provided by Ashley Lopez, M.S. M.S. CCC-SLP, who works closely with patients and families to create an individualized plan of care. Ashley uses evidence-based strategies and a supportive, patient-centered approach to help individuals develop practical communication tools and greater confidence when speaking across different settings.
